Zambia's Lake Kariba

Lake Kariba

Spread across the bounds of both Zambia as well as Zimbabwe, Lake Kariba is a massive man made lake, as well as one of outstanding beauty. In its surrounds, discover breathtaking scenery, diverse wildlife and mammoth tiger fish.

Almost a half a century ago, this Lake stood not as a mass of water, but rather as a desolate desert of scorching heat. Due to the demand of the nation’s quickly growing population, Zimbabwe forged a concrete wall between the neck of a narrow gorge, thereby resulting in the serene waters that stand today. While Zimbabwe’s constructional feat created the largest man made lake to date, it also displaced thousands of indigenous people and resulted in hundreds of deaths during its construction.

Soon after the dam was finished, Zambia and Zimbabwe experienced two massive floods that all but destroyed the wall, an occurrence many local tribes attribute to an angry Nyaminyami, the River God. Today, the dam and its lake remain a remarkable landmark between the two countries; a statement of man’s achievement and nature’s reluctance, modern growth and the loss because of it.
