Uganda's Western Region
Kibale Forest National Park
Most notorious for its healthy population of more than 500 chimpanzees, the Kibale Forest National Park also boasts a plethora of lesser known treasures, including baboons, red, black and white colobus monkeys, buffalo, duiker, civet cat and the third largest population of elephant in Uganda. As you hike through its lush greenery, listen for the distinct calls of almost 325 bird species, and witness the colorful clouds of brilliant butterflies that inhabit the park.
Kibale’s diverse wildlife only adds to the great enchantment spawned from the park’s lush scenery, with serene lakes, sprawling grasslands, spongy marshes, and dense forests. Covering 766km of pristine tropical forest, Kibale encompasses mammoth trees, some more than 50 m tall, broad buttress roots and a dense carpet of undergrowth.
Only 30km from the park, find the charming village of Fort Portal, a pleasant center surrounded by rolling tea plantations from which to embark on your journey through the many wonders of the park. Track the native chimpanzees that inhabit the park or simply lose yourself in its immaculate beauty.
