Uganda
For three long and arduous hours, you trek the lush paths of the Bwindi National Forest. Dense undergrowth grabs at your fatigued feet and massive branches of broad leaves punch at your forehead. In the surrounding rainforest you hear the rustling of bushes and the shrieks of the birds above, reminding you that you are far from alone in this sprawling greenery. Finally, the trying hike comes to an abrupt halt, and the intense beating of your heart changes from that of strain to that of unquenchable anticipation. And, at that moment, the treachery of the past three hours is forgotten, as you stare into the deep brown eyes of a creature not so far from yourself…the endangered mountain gorilla.
Home to almost half of the world’s mountain gorilla population, a personal introduction promises to be one of the pinnacle highlights of your venture through the wondrous landscape of Uganda. However, with dense forests of ancient mahogany and fig trees, towering volcanoes adorned with glacier tipped crags and mammoth vegetation, and a plethora of culturally pungent villages and experiences, Uganda offers a great deal more than simply intriguing wildlife. Raft the turbulent Victoria Nile, browse the native wares of an indigenous market, or trek the lush slopes in search of an experience of the primitive kind.
