Rwanda's Kigali

Kigali

Decades ago, Rwanda claimed the title, Land of Eternal Spring. Its scenic capital, Kigali, is an honest reflection of the reputation. Spanning a landscape of ridges, hills and valleys, Kigali is a small, yet immensely stunning city, offering views of the pristinely cultivated and terraced countryside beyond. Its mountains and their hills appear to stretch in everlasting fluctuations, and the country’s surplus of rainfall keeps them a vibrant emerald green.

Still, Kigali’s captivating natural beauty cannot fully guise its recent history of pain and needless lost. The parliamentary building still wears the holes of bullets and mortar shells, a cutting reminder of the 100 days of madness Kigali experienced in 1994, when brutal killings and murderous rampage filtered through the streets of the capital. Yet, while the city shows scars of Rwanda’s traumatic genocide, Kigali looks proudly forward, focusing on its bright future, rather than its tragic past.

Visit the Kigali Memorial Centre, a poignant tribute to the tragedy of years past, or enjoy the relaxed nightlife that springs to life as the weekend rolls upon the capital.
