Namibia's Northwest
Kaokoveld Conservation Area
Hidden within the far northwest corner of Namibia find one of the last remaining wilderness in the world. Untouched within its protected seclusion just south of the Kunene River, the Kaokoveld is Namibia in its most primeval. Home to one of the last remaining nomadic tribes known as the Himba, the dry desert mountains of the Kaokoveld resonate with unadulterated culture and intrigue. For centuries, these native people have remained impervious to modern influence despite their appeal amongst western visitors.
The Kaokoveld Conservation Area, composed of the Kaokoveld and its surrounding highlights, boast a bounty of scenic treasures. With rugged desert peaks, vast panoramas, sparse vegetation and the humble kraals of the Himba people, the Kaokoveld is brimming with sights to entertain your eyes. Traverse the utopian landscape of the Marienfluss Valley marked by shimmering purple mountain chains, or challenge the Van-Zyl’s Pass, reputed as the most difficult in all of Namibia.
