Madagascar's Western Madagascar
Western Madagascar
In the vast Western Region of Madagascar there exists but a speckling of the dry deciduous forest that once carpeted the entire domain. Home to the Sakalava people, a formidable ethnic group known for their unique African customs such as possessions of spirits, the tromba and a cult of royal relics, the Western Region offers far more than just a scenic Malagasy setting.
Amidst the Western hills, find towering limestone pinnacles known as tsingy, or karst, and stands of bizarrely shaped baobab trees. Wander the forests of the Reserve Forestiere de Kirindy and Parc National d’Ankarafantsika, float aimlessly down the Tsiribihina River, or ascend the tsingy in Parc Naitonal des Tsingy de Bemaraha for the true Madagascar experience.
