Egypt's Alexandria

Alexandria

Situated between Cairo and the Mediterranean coast, discover the most populous region of Egypt, Alexandria. Fed by the rich nutrients of the River Nile, this area of fertile farmland is among the agriculturally wealthiest part of the country as it has been for centuries. Sadly, as the majority of homes in this region were built from the Nile’s mud, they have returned to their original state over the years and little remains of the cities historic structures.

However, the Egyptian world of fellahin, or peasantry, thrives as it did ages ago within this fertile Delta Region, and offers visitors a unique glimpse into an Egyptian society of ages past. At the western edge of the quiet Delta, find the bustling city of Alexandria, Egypt’s second city and primary seaport. Founded by Alexander the Great in 4th century BC, Alexandria flourished as one of the great Graeco-Roman cities of the world, a glorious heritage that can still be seen today.
