Botswana's Okavango Delta

Okavango Delta

The 1430km long Okavango River travels quite a journey to give Botswana the rich river delta for which it is known. Rising in central Angola, flowing southeast across Namibia’s Caprivi Strip and cascading through Popa Falls to finally land in its Botswana home, the river undergoes as series of twists and turns, squeezes and expansions, additions and detractions.

As it reaches the thirsty sands of the Kalahari, the Okavango seemingly disappears into a series of lagoons, channels and islands, giving it the reputation as the river that can never find the sea. However, it is this great disappearing act that provides this desert country its perennial waters and resulting wetland, as well as the plethora of birds and wildlife such conditions attract, and the numerous visitors that come here to witness such a phenomenon each year.
